In part one of this two-part blog series, we went over some simple concepts that are often associated with the combination of modern and traditional furniture styles. This is a common combo to go for today, and it’s easy to achieve if you pay the proper attention to a few simple themes.
At Amish Crafted Furniture, our wide showroom of solid wood furniture for Tulsa clients is generally considered on the traditional side, though we have a number of pieces that speak to modern styles as well. What are some other considerations to keep in mind if you’re looking to mix and match between these two furniture styles in your home? Here’s a general primer.
TYING PIECES TOGETHER
In part one of our series, we discussed starting with the major pieces in your room and working your way down to the smaller details and accessories. This is still good advice, but it’s important to take it a step further and think about how those pieces are going to interact with each other.
One way to bring a sense of cohesion between different furniture styles is by choosing similar colors for your upholstery. This doesn’t mean everything has to match perfectly – in fact, it’s often more interesting to have a few different shades that play off each other. But if everything is too disparate, it can start to look like a hodgepodge rather than a carefully curated collection.
Of course, you don’t want everything to match perfectly, either. A little bit of contrast can go a long way in making a room more interesting. In general, it’s a good idea to choose one or two colors that will serve as your anchors, and then you can add in pops of other shades here and there.
FINISHING IT OFF
Once you’ve gone about choosing your major pieces and tying them together with similar colors, it’s time to move on to the finishing details. Again, this is where you can really have some fun and show off your personal style.
One way to do this is by mixing different patterns and textures. If everything is too matchy-matchy, it can start to look a bit boring. But if you mix in some different patterns, it can add some visual interest to the room. Just be sure not to go overboard – too many patterns can be overwhelming.
Another way to add some personality to your space is with accessories. This is where you can really have some fun and show off your personal style. You can use accessories to add a pop of color, bring in different textures, or just add some visual interest to the room.
When it comes to mixing and matching different furniture styles, there are no hard and fast rules. But if you keep a few simple concepts in mind, you can easily create a space that is both stylish and inviting.
